What is FTP? FTP, or file transfer protocol, is a method for transferring files between two computers. Typically, an FTP server allows you to upload and download data while connecting through the internet. It's typically used in large networks and companies to share information across offices and buildings. There are several benefits to using FTP: you can upload and download files at any time without having them stored on your computer, you can update your website or other networking sites quickly with new content, you can keep different versions of one document by uploading it separately with different names for each version. There are also disadvantages: if it crashes or loses power then everything connected will lose their connection (e.g. all uploaded files will be lost); it is more vulnerable to hacking then a hard drive; slow connection speeds. Conclusion: FTP is an excellent method for uploading documents that don't need to be stored on one's computer, but it's not the best way for everyday use because of its lack of storage space. History 1: Browsers and FTPs Interaction. The invention of the first commercial browser developed by Netscape has changed the way people were used to communicate with other computers on the net. The first web browsers were developed in 1989, and they were designed so users could view static content located on remote servers( 1 ). By early 1990s, more and more companies started realizing the potential of this new medium. One of the first companies to capitalize on browser technology was FTP Software. Netscape worked with Netsite to create one of the first web server applications called 'Site Server'. This application allowed access to FTP servers on the internet. Site Server would be able to connect to FTP servers, upload or download files (sometimes referred as "push pull") and then return information about these files back to the browser( 2 ). History 2: Web Servers and FTP. Domain name systems (DNS) were invented in 1983 by Paul Mockapetris, while he was working at SRI International's Network Information Center( 3 ). DNS was initially envisioned to help with the shortage of online domain names by allowing users to remember names rather than numbers. DNS plays a crucial role in the operation of the Internet today, its continued development has allowed it to meet ever-increasing demands( 4 ). DNS is used by clients across the internet to find servers they are interested in. It is also used by servers to find other servers on which they depend for services (e.g., email delivery). The use of FTP over HTTP protocol is criticized for several reasons. For example, unlike FTP, HTTP protocol has automated data validation mechanisms that ensure that data transmitted between two end points are valid and parseable. This feature addressed the main weakness of FTP system where security is compromised after session establishment. FTP has one primary advantage over HTTP/S in that it is persistent. A client can access the same file multiple times. HTTP does not support this function (the client must accept each new request to get the data). For this reason, many users of WebDAV (an extension of HTTP developed by Microsoft) use their web browsers to access server-based workstations on their home network without having to leave their local network. eccc085e13
